UEFA paid Celtic in excess of £25million for their participation in the Champions League this season - with the Parkhead side banking £7.6m more than rivals Rangers.
Glasgow's big two both landed hefty paydays when they qualified for the top tier, with Ange Postecoglou 's side going straight in as league winners while Rangers fought through PSV to make the group stage, although neither team's campaigns went quite to plan. The Hoops' two draws against Shakhtar Donetsk represented the only points picked up by Scotland's representatives in the Champions League as both bottomed out of their respective groups.
Every point picked up in Europe is valuable - literally - and that pair of results against the Ukrainian team were enough to bank Celtic €1.9m (£1.7m) while six consecutive defeats for Rangers saw them take home no prize money from their clashes with Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax. But that doesn't tell the full story about the financial disparity between the teams in Europe, as football business blogger Swiss Ramble laid it bare.
While both took home a hefty €15.6m (£13.6m) participation fee and a similar share of the TV pool - €3.6m for Celtic and €3.2m for Rangers - the big difference was in the UEFA ten-year coefficient payment. While Celtic have been regular competitors on the European stage over the last decade, Rangers were absent from any continental football between 2012 and 2017, and that has had a substantial effect on their payout - taking home just €2.3m to their rivals €9.1m.
