Why Borussia Dortmund want to add £75million Chelsea flop to Niklas Sule transfer scoop

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a summer transfer swoop for Chelsea flop Timo Werner.

Werner, 25, made a cameo appearance off the bench in the Carabao Cup final to no avail as regular minutes on the pitch have been hard to come by for the German international since Romelu Lukaku's signing.

“We have always had the options," manager Thomas Tuchel said in the past when Werner was absent alongside Lukaku for a Champions League group stage encounter back in 2021.

"It is on the players when they are needed and they have the chance to show their potential, they need to show it. That’s life at Chelsea. This is what they do in a very impressive way. We always have options.

"When we play with Romelu, we play with Romelu. When we play with Timo, we play with Timo. When they are not available we try to find solutions.

"That’s why we are here, it’s why we have a big squad. It is why we trust everybody, the guys know what it takes to play for Chelsea."

It's no surprise to see Tuchel highlight the fact that no attackers are mainstays in the first eleven this season and this is why many of the frontline have their respective futures up in the air as the German looks to once again re-shuffle the pack in the summer to see if he can find the right solutions.

In the midst of uncertainty surrounding the current ownership in west London, certain clubs around Europe are looking to pounce on opportunities around Chelsea to poach some of their European and World Champion squad and alongside the likes of Leicester City who have a big admiration for Callum Hudson-Odoi, Dortmund have signalled their intent with the Blues' number 11.

According to Sky Germany, there are no 'concrete' negotiations for Werner as of now but the fact he fits the right profile of attacker needed in the sense of his pace and Bundesliga experience coupled with his agent's great relationship with the club in question makes this transfer operation as possibility.

Obviously, the Bundesliga outfit will hope for a reduction price to be agreed upon the £50million the European Champions paid RB Leipzig for Werner in the summer of 2020 but Marina Granovskaia will have the right to demand more if pricing sites are to be trusted.

As per the CIES Football Observatory, they are pricing Werner at up to £75m due to the fact he still has three years left on his contract.

With such a hefty fee quoted, could this prompt Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke into agreeing terms on a loan to buy before making such a big investment in a player who now has questions attached to his name?

Regardless of what goes down in the summer, Marco Rose's interest in the Chelsea flop has hinted at the the fact that Erling Haaland will be the big name to depart the Signal Iduna Park once the 2021/22 campaign comes to an end.

Having already beat Chelsea to the punch for free agent signing and highly regarded Niklas Sule, taking Werner off the books of the club could free up space and the potential wages for an ambitious play for the Norwegian striker.

Could Werner be the pawn in what could turn out to be a transfer merry-go-round?
