Why Arsenal were mentioned in Neville, Carragher and Souness argument after Liverpool vs Man Utd

Arsenal fans had an extremely enjoyable weekend of Premier League action.

Mikel Arteta's side secured a dramatic injury-time 3-2 win over Bournemouth on Saturday after trailing 2-0 with just over half an hour to play. That victory restored their five-point lead at the top of the table after Manchester City had defeated Newcastle United earlier in the day.

Gunners supporters also would have been pleased to see Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United lose, with United thumped 7-0 by fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. After the match, tempers were running high in the Sky Sports studios as United hero Gary Neville argued with Liverpool legends Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher.

Souness labelled the result as embarrassing for the Red Devils before claiming that Erik ten Hag's men haven't been convincing in recent wins over West Ham and Newcastle United. "What that result has done today, there is not a worse result for Man United - like if it had been the other way around for Liverpool on the end of a seven", Souness said.

"If there is one team Man United don’t want to lose to heavily - heavily, deservedly so, no freak result, a team so much better than them - is coming to Liverpool today and getting turned over like this in a manner which is embarrassing. Embarrassing for Man United, embarrassing for the players, and embarrassing for the manager.

"It’s a record result for them, this has been a really bad day for Man United - no freak result. Liverpool could have scored more than seven, and for me today they’ve got away lightly, it could have been worse than seven for them.

"All this talk that they’ve been resilient - you might have been talking about it - for me, they were winning games just by getting by. I don’t think they’ve been convincing - they weren’t convincing against West Ham midweek, they weren’t convincing in the cup final. I think they’ve been getting away with it, and they’ve got a lot of work to do."

However, Neville was far from impressed with his colleague's analysis, saying: "That’s nonsense, Graeme." This was the debate that followed, with Arsenal brought up:

Souness: "That’s my opinion. Your opinion is that Liverpool didn’t play well today?"

Neville: "They’ve beaten Barcelona, who are top of the Spanish league, over two games."

Souness : "They beat them really well."

Neville : "They’re playing every three days, they’ve performed every three days - even the game they lost at Arsenal, they played well. I watch Manchester United a lot more than you do and that’s nonsense. Honestly, in the last few months them Manchester United players have played really well."

Souness : "And I saw Arsenal go to Old Trafford and should have beaten Manchester United. This is the worst possible result for Man United, this is more than just a punch on the nose for them - it is a humiliating result for them."

Neville: "That’s the thing, the reason it is a freak is because it has not happened for about 80 or 100 years."
