The only way Arsenal would be forced to forfeit postponed PSV Europa League clash

Arsenal's Europa League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Thursday has been postponed.

Last week's round of Premier League fixtures were called off entirely as a mark of respect following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, September 8th. The move proved to be controversial as other sports, such as cricket and both codes of rugby, decided to continue playing.

Arsenal will have to wait a little longer to return to action, however, as their Europa League Group Stage tie with PSV has also been postponed due to a shortage of police resources. A statement on arsenal.com read: "Our UEFA Europa League home fixture against PSV Eindhoven, scheduled for Thursday, September 15th, has been postponed.

"The postponement follows liaison between UEFA, the Metropolitan Police and ourselves after the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"We are working with the authorities to reschedule the match, and any tickets (including those purchased via Ticket Exchange or received via Ticket Transfer) and/or hospitality packages purchased for this fixture will be valid for the rescheduled date.

"For any season ticket holders who have sold their ticket via Ticket Exchange or transferred their ticket via Ticket Transfer, your ticket will remain inactive for the rescheduled date."

Although the Gunners are optimistic that the game will be replayed, finding a suitable available date will be difficult. With the World Cup due to commence in the middle of November, the only potential date for a rearranged fixture to take place before the end of 2022 is December 29.

If that date cannot be agreed upon, then the Gunners may be forced to forfeit the fixture 3-0. Similar happened to their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa Conference League last season as Spurs were unable to field a team for the December 9, 2021, clash against Rennes due to a Covid-19 outbreak among Antonio Conte's squad and staff.
