Why are there no singles for the new Billie Eilish album?

Billie Eilish has shared the reason she isn’t releasing any singles from her new album.

The singer's third studio record, Hit Me Hard And Soft, is due to be released on May 17.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about why she has changed her approach this time, she said: “I don’t like singles from albums.

"Every single time an artist I love puts out a single without the context of the album, I’m just already prone to hating on it. I really don’t like when things are out of context."

She continued: “This album is like a family: I don’t want one little kid to be in the middle of the room alone.”

The interviewer then agreed with Eilish’s decision after playing Hit Me Hard And Soft.

Last year, the pop singer spoke about what had changed in the creative process while working on her third album.

“Everything is different about it,” she said of the music-making process while appearing as a guest on Dua Lipa‘s At Your Service podcast. “I’ve been trying to compare recently, just because I’m getting used to doing it in a different way. And trying to be like, ‘It’s OK to do that. I’m OK. I’m still able to do that; I’m capable still.’”

She elaborated on exactly what’s changed, explaining: “The way that I exist in the room is different, my voice has completely changed since then… The voice-changing thing is a trip! It’s all kind of shocking.”

Her website says the album should be listened to chronologically so it does what the title says and "hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically, while bending genres and defying trends along the way".

Her debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, was released in 2019.

The star released the Barbie song What Was I Made For? in 2023 – for which she was awarded the best original song Oscar, alongside her brother, Finneas O'Connell – at this year's academy awards.
