Why are there no adverts on TV? Commercial breaks pulled following Queen's death

Television schedules over the next few days are set to experience major changes following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Many stations and channels have tweaked their programming as the nation enters an official period of mourning.

Britain's longest reigning monarch passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 8. A statement from Buckingham Palace read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Welsh presenter Huw Edwards was close to tears as he announced the Queen's death live on BBC, with the channel pulling all its scheduled shows to broadcast special news coverage. ITV and many others followed suit out of respect for the late Head of State.

Many media companies across the UK have also paused all advertising. In a statement sent out to media outlets, ITV announced: "There will be no commercial breaks on ITV's main channel during this period."

On Friday, September 9, Good Morning Britain aired a special episode that saw Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid pay tribute to the Queen. The poignant show saw GMB replace its usual ticker with a simple black band and no music played between segments as a mark of respect. ITV also didn't cut to any adverts during the broadcast. On Saturday, September 10 ITV filled its main schedule with news coverage and royal documentaries, however the broadcaster has confirmed that The Masked Dancer and The Voice UK are both set to go ahead.

The entertainment shows will air as planned alongside Ninja Warrior UK and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. ITV bosses said: "All programmes were pre-recorded before the sad news of Her Majesty The Queen's passing. " You can read more on this here.

According to BirminghamLive, Channel 4 also confirmed that "all advertising and sponsorship has been temporarily suspended on Channel 4 and All 4".
