Meteors Have Joined Fortnite's Comet In The Sky: What Does It Mean?

Fortnite’s mysterious falling stars. What do they mean?

Not only is a giant comet slowly falling toward Tilted Towers in Fortnite, now a bunch of meteors are crashing to the earth.

These shooting stars have become more frequent in the past couple of days as the comet continues to grow larger. And fans are speculating about what all of this means.

One prevailing theory is that the comet is set to crash into the map, eviscerating Tilted Towers and potentially changing the entire landscape of the game. This would almost certainly happen sometime during Week 10 (next week) possibly closing out Season 3 and giving us a taste of Season 4′s theme.

But that only explains the comet, and it’s just one guess among many. What about the meteors?

Players have been spotting these streaking through the sky, and they could just be detritus from the comet itself, smaller pieces splitting off before entering the atmosphere. But what if these meteors themselves have a gameplay component?

In PUBG, there’s a feature called the Red Zone, a randomly spawning area that wreaks havoc on any player unlucky enough to be caught in its perimeter.

The Red Zone in PUBG.

There’s nothing comparable in Fortnite (even though many other things in the game have piggybacked handsomely on PUBG’s mechanics.) But what if these falling meteors aren’t just pretty to look at in the night sky? What if some start falling that actually cause damage?

I’m not suggesting this would be exactly like the bombardment we find in PUBG, but randomly falling meteors smashing into the ground—and into players—would make for a much more frightening game. And some pretty epic deaths. Imagine building your sky tower in a final shootout with several other players only to find yourself smashed to smithereens by a giant, fiery hulk of space rock? It would make for a pretty cool Replay, if nothing else.

Even better if it happened to be your opponent’s tower turned to rubble. With guided missiles gone (or at least vaulted) this type of random death from the sky would at least make the game more interesting.

I’m not saying this is likely. It’s just a neat thought, really. It wouldn’t have to be in one giant red circle, either. They could hit randomly, or fall more frequently in the smaller circles as the match progressed.

Whatever the case, data-miners have found a new ‘Impact’ mode that’s coming to the game. Could that have something to do with all these falling space boulders? It certainly seems likely.

Or they could just be shooting stars prettifying Fortnite’s skybox. Something tells me we’ll know soon enough. Let me know what you think the significance of these shooting stars and comet might be on Twitter and Facebook. Thanks for reading!
