Why Aleksandar Mitrovic wasn't allowed to retake Fulham penalty at Newcastle

Aleksandar Mitrovic squandered the chance to give Fulham the lead at Newcastle after his penalty was disallowed - before Magpies punished their former striker to win 1-0.

The 28-year-old was handed the chance to score his 12th Premier League goal of the season from the spot after Bobby Decordova-Reid was hacked down. It was an even affair up until the penalty as Marco Silva's side were given a huge opportunity to open the scoring.

Mitrovic thought he had netted the spot-kick, only for referee Robert Jones to disallow the goal. This was because the forward touched the ball twice before his effort flew beyond a hapless Nick Pope. The Serbian slipped, and after striking with his right foot first, the ball then cannoned off his left boot before going in.

But, as per Law 14 of FIFA's rulebook, if, after the penalty kick has been taken, the kicker touches the ball again before it has touched another player an indirect free-kick is awarded or a direct free-kick for a handball. That is exactly what happened in the clash at St James' Park as a free-kick was given to the Magpies.

It was a moment of frustration for Mitrovic, who cut a frustrated figure after the incident and would be punished for not taking his chance as Newcastle scored the winner in the 89th minute. Sean Longstaff's cross was met by Callum Wilson at the back post and the striker brought the ball down before squaring for Alexander Isak to head home his third league goal in four matches.

The Magpies held to secure their first win in three league matches to move them up to third in the table and back above Manchester United on 38 points from 19 games. Eddie Howe's side had to dig in to earn the three points against a dogged Fulham side, who have been excellent since their return to the top-flight.

However, Mitrovic will take all the headlines after his penalty miss proved costly. In actual fact, that is the 11th time he hasn't found the net from the spot in his career - with his most recent the one he missed against Southampton on New Year's Eve - and his droubt from the spot continued in the defeat at Newcastle.

But he isn't the only player that has double-touched a penalty after Riyad Mahrez did something similar in Leicester's clash with Manchester City in May 2017. The Algerian stepped up to take the spot-kick, before slipping and hitting the ball from his left foot and onto his right as the ball flew past Claudio Bravo.

Like Mitrovic's strike, Mahrez's penalty was not allowed the stand and it resulted in Leicester losing the game at the Etihad Stadium despite Shinji Okazaki's impressive effort.
