Who will win Rangers vs Liverpool? Our writers make their predictions for the Champions League clash

That's the thing about a battle. It really needs two to be up for the fight. So to call the Champions League clash between Liverpool and Rangers at Anfield a Battle of Britain was a bit of a stretch.

These cross-border clashes are usually all about blood and thunder, especially on the part of the Scottish sides as they take it to their rich footballing neighbours. Celtic and Rangers both enjoyed epic wins over Leeds United in Europe's premier competition previously and the Hoops downed Manchester United and went down with a fight at Old Trafford.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men must show that spirit and make sure even if Jurgen Klopp's men leave Govan with maximum points that they have at least been made to work for them. Here, our panel of expert Record Sport writers give their score predictions ahead of a huge night at Ibrox.

Last week’s no-contest at Anfield doesn’t bode well for Rangers. But Liverpool’s early season crisis deepened at Arsenal the weekend and, with Man City to come on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp will rest legs at Ibrox. With a capacity crowd and a desperate need for a result Rangers might be able to win their first Group A point.

Rangers keeper Allan McGregor denies Mark O'Hara from close range on Saturday (SNS Group)

Rangers need at least a point to have any chance of extending their stay in Europe beyond Christmas and with a little bit of bravery, a lot of luck, Allan McGregor being Allan McGregor and injury-hit Liverpool perhaps having one eye on the weekend clash with Manchester City, I think it’s achievable.

Rangers have the Ibrox factor and Liverpool still look pretty ropey at the back. With a bit of belief, it could be an interesting night but you fear the Reds will still have just a touch too much in attack.

Rangers 1 Liverpool 2

Gavin Berry

The Ibrox side simply have to make it more of a contest than last week and with the Reds having mounting injury problems and confidence low then the Light Blues have enough to get a point to allow them to fight on in Group A for another day.

Rangers 1 Liverpool 1

Gordon Parks

It will be another dose of Champions League reality for the Light Blues. The red hot European atmosphere at Ibrox will inspire the vastly superior Reds as much as it will the hosts.

Rangers 0 Liverpool 2

Graeme Young

It’s crystal clear Liverpool are a pale imitation of the side who were two results from the quadruple, however, they still possess an array of stars capable of breathing life into a misfiring season. Rangers have been waiting for a signature Champions League night and will do enough to secure a thrilling draw in an ebb and flow encounter.
