Argentina have won the 2022 FIFA World Cup after winning on penalties following a 3-3 draw against France in the final. Three penalties were awarded in the match with Kylian Mbappe scoring a hat-trick and Lionel Messi grabbing a brace.
Angel Di Maria won his nation a penalty after being fouled by Ousmane Dembele which Messi converted to open the scoring. Di Maria then added a second shortly after following a brilliant passing move before slotting the ball past Hugo Lloris.
Mbappe scored two quick-fire goals late in normal time to send the match into extra time before Messi then added a third in the 109th minute. The French forward sealed his hat-trick with his second penalty of the match in the 118th minute to send the game to a penalty shootout.

Emiliano Martinez proved to be the hero for Argentina yet again after saving Kingsley Coman's spot kick before Aurelien Tchouameni slid his shot wide of the post. Gonzalo Montiel sealed the win with a calm finish from the spot before breaking down into tears.
Messi led the celebrations with his teammates on the pitch as fans bowed to him in the stands. The Argentina star was surprised by his mother who had made her way onto to the pitch to embrace her son after he finally became a World Cup-winning captain.
His mother was seen crying as she hugged her son after he followed in the footsteps of Diego Maradona in lifting the World Cup with Argentina. Messi was later seen celebrating with his children on the pitch before he won the player of the tournament award and lifted the iconic trophy after what could be his final World Cup appearance.
