Who stars in Channel 4's Vardy v Rooney as Wagatha Christie drama begins

A new drama is set to land on our screens tonight - but it's a story that will already be familiar to most, recreating the legal battle that followed one of the biggest bombshells in the celeb world.

It has unbelievably been three years since the so-called Wagatha Christie saga began, when in 2019 Coleen Rooney revealed that she had orchestrated an elaborate plan to figure out which of her Instagram followers were leaking stories from her private account to The Sun. Coleen ultimately posted her findings on Twitter, accusing Rebekah Vardy of being behind the leaks after fabricating stories and changing her Instagram settings so that only her fellow WAG could see them, before soon finding them in the newspaper.

In the wake of the court case that followed, Channel 4 has put together a star-studded drama based on the events that gripped the nation. Here's everything you can expect from Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama.

What can viewers expect from Vardy v Rooney?

Over two nights the Channel 4 courtroom drama will cover the battle between Coleen and Rebekah in the High Court, which took place between May and July this year after Vardy sued Rooney for libel following the explosive leaking accusations. Spoilers - the court ultimately dismissed Vardy's claim, on the basis that Rooney's accusations were 'substantially true'.

If you were gripped by the events of the Wagatha Christie trial as they unfolded earlier this year, then it looks like you are in for a treat. The drama was created from real court transcripts from the case, according to Channel 4, and promises to show viewers "all of the incredible and unbelievable moments" of the whole saga.

Dion Lloyd as Wayne Rooney, Chanel Cresswell as Coleen Rooney and Michael Sheen as David Sherborne (Channel 4)

Who's playing who?

Natalia Tena stars as Rebekah Vardy, who viewers may recognise for her standout roles as Nymphadora Tonks in the Harry Potter film series and Osha in Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, BAFTA winner Chanel Cresswell stars as Coleen Rooney, who is best known for playing Kelly Jenkins in the This Is England films.

Good Omens and Staged star Michael Sheen plays Coleen's barrister David Sherborne, the latest in a long line of roles in which he has portrayed fictionalised versions of real people. The 53-year-old actor has previously starred as the likes of Tony Blair, Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, and most recently Chris Tarrant in the ITV drama Quiz about a famous Who Wants To Be A Millionaire contestant scandal.

Simon Coury stars as Rebekah's barrister Hugh Tomlinson, known for his legal work for famous faces including David Beckham, Ashley Cole, Ryan Giggs, Lily Allen and even then-Prince Charles. Meanwhile, Dion Lloyd plays Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy is played by Marci Nagyszokolyai.

Where can I watch the drama?

The first episode of Vardy v Rooney airs on Channel 4 tonight, Wednesday December 21, at 9pm. A two-part series, the second and final instalment of the courtroom drama will be shown at the same time on Thursday December 22, and both episodes will also be available to watch on All4.
