Who shot Tupac Shakur? Police serve search warrant three decades after rapper’s death

Almost 30 years after the murder of superstar rapper Tupac Shakur, police have authorised a search warrant in the hunt for evidence.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has said a search warrant was executed on Monday in the nearby city of Henderson but declined to comment any further on the area searched or if anything was found.

Shakur, one of the biggest superstars in hip-hop history, was killed aged just 25 in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

He was shot as he was leaving a Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon fight in September 1996, when a Cadillac pulled up alongside the BMW he was riding in.

But who was he? Here is everything we know:

Who was Tupac Shakur?

A 25-year-old hip-hop sensation, Tupac Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks in New York, to political activist parents who were part of the Black power movement Black Panther.

He was an American rap artist, actor, activist, and poet and was known by various alias such as 2Pac, Makaveli, and Pac.

The Guinness Book of World Records records him as the top-selling hip-hop artist of all time, having sold more than 73 million albums worldwide.

Tupac’s music was considered different and inspiring as his music and lyrics addressed contemporary social issues that plagued inner cities, and he is considered a symbol of activism against inequality.

In June of this year, Shakur received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

How did he die?

On the night of his death, Tupac had been at the MGM in Las Vegas watching the Mike Tyson vs Bruce Seldon fight. He went back to his hotel room then got in a car to go to a nightclub with friends.

At about 11pm, the car stopped at a red light and it is reported that a white Cadillac pulled up and the person inside fired shots into the car Tupac was in. He was hit four times, once in the arm, once in the leg, and twice in the chest.

He was rushed to the nearby University Medical Centre hospital and put on life support, but died on September 13. The official cause of death was given as respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest associated with multiple gunshot wounds.

What’s the latest on the investigation?

It has been nearly three decades since the incident and no-one has ever been convicted of the murder.

Now police say they have executed a search warrant in connection with the death but have declined to comment or give any further details on what that means, where they have searched, or whether they found anything in the search.
