Who's taking over from Steve Wright on Radio 2's afternoon slot?

The fateful day has slowly crept up on us and Steve Wright will present his final afternoon show on BBC Radio 2 on Friday, September 30. The 68-year-old radio personality has held the coveted Radio 2 slot for more 23 years, for this current stint, presenting Steve Wright In The Afternoon. But who will be taking over? Read on to find out.

In July, Wright confirmed he'd be stepping down from his Radio 2 afternoon presenting duties. In a heartfelt message posted to the network's Twitter account, Wright said: “In advance of our last SWITA show for a while, I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to listen at any point over the past 23 years.

"I personally would like to say what a privilege it’s been bringing you great choons, conversation information, entertainment, high humour and of course great guests. I know I have been extremely lucky to do this work and have never taken it for granted."

Aside from hosting main show, Steve Wright In The Afternoon, Wright also presents Radio 2's Sunday Love Songs show - a role he will continue to do. He will also continue to work with the network on a podcast focusing on the Serious Jockin' segment of his show, which happens every Friday. You can read more about that here. Steve, one of the big name DJs on Radio1 in the 1980s, also hosted Steve Wright in the Afternoon on that station from 1981 to 1993, before moving to mornings in the mid-1990s and then making the journey to Radio 2 in 1999.

Scott Mills is set to step into Wright's slot, after he departed Radio 1 last month. After joining the BBC in 1998, Mills, 49, presented the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show until 2004 after which he moved to a weekend afternoon slot for six months.

Until his departure in August, he presented the Scott Mills show on Radio 1 between 1pm and 4pm, along with co-presenter Chris Stark, as well as The Official Chart Show on a Friday since 2018. Mills will join Radio 2 to present a new weekday show, while Stark, who also departed Radio 1 last month, is joining the Capital Breakfast Show.
