Who's cheapest for mince pies, Baileys and other Christmas favourites? We shopped at four supermarkets to find out

There are certain food and drinks that are somewhat synonymous with Christmas - Baileys and mince pies to name a few.

With prices rising for everything from basic groceries to toiletries, shoppers are more likely than ever to be on the lookout for the cheapest products this year.

We've been taking a look at some of the festive family favourites to see how prices compare.

On our shopping list for four main supermarkets - Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons - was a litre bottle of Baileys, mince pies, a Terry's Chocolate Orange, After Eights and a bag of chocolate coins.

And with almost an 18pc increase from the cheapest to the most expensive, if anything our comparison proves that it certainly pays to shop around.

Tesco's Clubcard played a big part in it coming out as the cheapest, as it's current offer brings the litre of Baileys down from £20 to £9.50 - the cheapest across all four supermarkets.

Baileys is cheapest at Tesco, with its Clubcard offer of a litre bottle for £9.50 (Manchester Family / MEN)

Prices at Morrisons and Sainsbury's were close though, at £9.99 and £10 respectively, followed by Asda at £12.

Asda's did come with a free Baileys Hot Chocolate Bombe, worth £3, although the offer didn't come through at the till so it was a dreaded trip to customer services to get a refund for that.

Tesco and Asda were both cheapest for mince pies, although 87p is quite a random price for both to decide on. Morrisons' was a more typical 99p, while Sainsbury's rounded it up to a tidy £1.

With various sizes of After Eight boxes on sale, we adjusted prices accordingly - and it was Asda and Tesco who proved cheapest at £2 for a 300g box.

Sainsbury's and Morrisons only had 400g tubs in stock, but the latter's came with a fancy festive tin to keep them in.

The price of Terry's Chocolate Orange was a standard £1 throughout, while the chocolate coins differed not only in price but in weight too - from an 80g netted bag costing 80p at Sainsbury's, to a 75g bag for 59p at Asda and 70g bags from Morrisons and Tesco, for 75p and 59p respectively.

Morrisons' two for £1 deal would have shaved 25p off the price though, bringing the cost of each bag down to 50p.
