Who is Ukrainian first lady Olena Zolenska - comedy writer turned women's rights campaigner

Plaudits from across the globe have been thrown at Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in the past week, but his wife is also sharing a portion of the limelight.

The Zelensky's have been thrust into a war they don't want and are the faces of Ukrainian resistance against Vladimir Putin's invasion.

While Putin has gained little but contempt and criticism from the West as he publicly scolds his staff, threatens the use of nuclear weapons and bombs Ukrainian civilians, Zelenksy has shown his face to the world and gained a huge amount of praise.

Zelensky is now known as the 'number one target' as Putin tries to 'decaptiate' the current government. With him at number one, he said: "My family is the number two goal."

There have already been reports of kill squads present in Kyiv looking for the president, one of which was claimed by the Ukrainians yesterday to have been 'eliminated'.

So who is Olena Zelenska, part of 'target number two'?

Olena Zelenska is the wife of Ukrainian President Zelensky and is the First Lady of Ukraine.

Now 44, the former architecture student used to be a comedy writer for her husband's act.

She was born Olena Kiyashko on February 5, 1978 in Kryvyi Rih, a city around 250 miles southeast of the country's capital Kyiv.

Her career in politics came as her husband made the switch from acting and comedy, saying that Volodymyr 'forgot' to tell her of his plan to run for president. In 2019, the year Zelensky became President, the First Lady appeared on the cover of the country's edition of Vogue.

Since taking office, she has championed women's causes including a campaign against domestic violence. In 2019, during a speech at the third Ukrainian Women’s Congress, she spoke of the country's commitment to the G7 international initiative on gender equality.

How did the Zelenskys meet?

Olena and Volodymyr grew up in the same city, but did not meet until they were at university. They were together for eight years before marrying in 2003 and have since had two children Sasha and Cyril.

They have not been seen together since Valentine's Day, with her and the children's location kept secret while rumoured death squads are believed to be prowling Kyiv looking for her husband.

Their location is not known, but they are said to still be in Ukraine and although she cannot be publicly seen like her husband, she has taken to social media to voice her support.

She said: "My dear people, Ukrainians! I’m looking at you all today: everyone I see on TV, on the streets, on the internet. I see your posts and videos. And you know what? You are incredible.

"I am proud to live with you and in the same country … Today I will not have panic and tears. I will be calm and confident. My children are looking at me, I will be next to them and next to my husband and with you. I love you! I love Ukraine!"
