Who is Tyler Perry in Netflix’s Harry and Meghan documentary?

Netflix has released the final three episodes of its highly-anticipated documentary exploring the lives of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The six-part series details the entire span of the couple’s six-year relationship, from their courtship to recent times which saw them controversially step down as senior members of the Royal Family.

The docuseries allows the couple to tell the “truth” about “what is happening behind closed doors,” Harry said in the show’s trailer. As well as hearing from the Sussex’s themselves, Harry & Meghan also includes commentary from journalists, historians and friends of the couple – many of whom are speaking publicly about what they witnessed for the first time.

Appearing in the final episode of the series is Hollywood mogul Tyler Perry. The American actor-comedian reveals how he got to know the royal couple and how he aided their move to the US after they left the UK.

Who is Tyler Perry?

The 53-year-old is best known for creating and performing the character Madea, an elderly yet tough African-American woman he has portrayed in many plays, films and TV shows since 1999. His acting credits also include the 2009 Star Trek remake, David Fincher’s 2014 thriller Gone Girl and the 2021 climate change satire Don’t Look Up.

He is also an author and playwright, and has written and produced many stage plays during the 1990s and early 2000s, both with and without his Madea character. In 2011, Forbes listed him as the highest-paid man in entertainment, earning $130 million between May 2010 and May 2011.

He was also included in Time’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2020. During Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the couple confirmed it was a Los Angeles mansion owned by Perry they lived in when they left Canada for the US, days before the first Covid lockdown.

They would go on to buy a home in nearby Montecito, but explained to Winfrey how Perry provided them with security after their UK tax payer-funded protection was removed. Speaking of their departure from British Columbia, Canada, Meghan said: “We didn’t have a plan. We needed a house and [Perry] offered his security as well so it gave us breathing room to try to figure out what we were going to do.”

In the documentary, Perry reveals he sent Meghan a letter before her wedding in which he “prayed for her to be able to move through it and hold on” after it emerged her father, Thomas Markle, had sold pictures to tabloids. The pair had never previously met, but Meghan said he offered help should she ever need it.

Two years after Harry and Meghan’s marriage, she contacted Perry for the first time. During their call, Meghan said she was a “wreck” and revealed to her new friend how she was “afraid” of the press and the royal family.

Perry revealed after their phone call he offered the couple his Beverly Hills mansion to use as their personal residence after they quit the monarchy.

“Stay as long as you need to,” he told the Duke and Duchess.

The eight-bedroom villa – which Perry purchased in 2004 for $4.3 million – sits on 22 acres of land and comes with 24,000-square-feet of living space, MailOnline reported.
