Istvan Kovacs will be the referee in charge of Liverpool's clash with Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16.
The referee, who officiates primarily in Romania's Liga 1, was selected to be a referee at the World Cup in Qatar where he was fourth official for eight matches, but did not take charge of any.
Kovacs is a 38-year-old PE teacher back in his native Romania and has taken charge of three Champions League games this season, including Chelsea's 1-0 loss at Dynamo Zagreb.

The referee has taken charge of the reigning European champions once and that came in last season's 4-3 first leg loss in the semi-final at Manchester City.
Liverpool's match with Madrid at Anfield will be the first time the Romanian has taken charge of a Reds game.
