Who is Rosie Jones? BBC pilots new reality TV sitcom People's Princess

The BBC is piloting a new unscripted "reality sitcom" that will follow Rosie Jones "as she attempts to navigate fame and her personal life".

Jones is already in the process of making the Channel 4 sitcom Disability Benefits, in which she stars as a disability benefits claimant who turns drug dealer when her benefits are slashed, co-writing the script with Peter Fellows.

This week, the comedian performed at the Royal Variety Performance Show. Last month, she also hosted the final of the BBC New Comedy Awards in Glasgow and won her episode of Celebrity Mastermind on BBC One, with Victoria Wood's sitcom Dinnerladies as her specialist subject.

The Channel 4 documentary Rosie Jones: Am I a R****d?, which Rosie Jones is the face of, recently came under fire due to its title.

“I get it, a lot of people will find this word very shocking and upsetting," she responded.

“But in my opinion, society doesn’t take this word and other ableist forms of language as seriously as any other form of abuse from any other minorities. So, I said to Channel 4: ‘Let’s do it, let’s tackle the problem head on and use that word in the title and then, hopefully, people will think twice about using the word and other ableist slurs ever again’.”

The choice of title has caused so much controversy that three disabled influencers scheduled to take part in the documentary have pulled out of it.

Here’s a look at Jones’ background and what she was known for before the documentary.

What is Rosie Jones known for?

Rosie Jones, 33, is a Yorkshire-born writer, actress, and comedian. She has worked on TV shows such as Disability Benefits, Sex Education, and Sky Comedy Shorts.

Jones has also appeared on various British panel shows, including Would I Lie To You?, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, QI and more.

What roles has Rosie Jones played?

In terms of acting credits, Jones is credited with appearing on Sky Comedy Shorts, Disability Benefits, Casualty, Might & Magic: Era of Chaos, Doctors, and Silent Witness.

She has also performed various stand-up comedy shows, including runs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

What condition does Rosie have?

Jones has cerebral palsy, which affects her movement and speech. She often incorporates her condition into her stand-up routines, using her slower pace of speech to accentuate comedic punch lines.

She describes her own style as "cheeky", stating that she makes jokes that able-bodied people could not by often referencing both disability and sexuality.
