Who is Roberto Gagliardini? Nottingham Forest transfer target in profile

Nottingham Forest are reportedly keen on signing Inter Milan midfielder Roberto Gagliardini in the final week of the window.

Gagliardini is out of contract at the San Siro in the summer and Gianluca Di Marzio claims Forest are looking to take advantage of that, though it unclear whether that would for now, or a pre-contract agreement. Forest are already well stacked in the midfield department, particularly after the arrival of Danilo and Gustavo Scarpa earlier in the window.

That said, Gagliardini would undoubtedly add further top-flight pedigree to Steve Cooper's side which would certainly help them in their continued battle to avoid the drop. So with that in mind, here is everything you need to know on Gagliardini amid the links to Forest.

Gagliardini has spent the entirety if his career in Italy after progressing through the ranks of the Atalanta academy. He had a number of loan spells away from the club at the likes of Cesena, Spezia and Vicenza before progressing to Atalanta's first team in 2016.

It was in the first half of the 2016/17 season that the 28-year-old established himself as a regular at the club before Inter Milan came calling in January. He joined the Italian powerhouses on an initial 18 month loan with an obligation to buy in the summer of 2018 for around £15 million.

He was very much a regular in his first five seasons at the club and scored three goals in 28 league appearances when Inter won the Serie A in 2020/21. Gagliardini has also lifted the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana (twice) at the San Siro, but has seen regular game time harder to come by this term.

He is also a seven-time capped Italy international, though the last of those came in November 2020. Gagliardini spoke earlier this month about his lack of minutes and admits his future is something he is seriously considering.

He said: "In my career I have had high level coaches and I have created experiences that I will always carry with me. If I came to Inter, it was because of my work ethic.

“My contract? I don’t intend to have this amount of minutes anymore. I feel I can still give a lot, I have a lot of desire to prove myself and so in June I will make my decisions."
