Who is Outlander's Master Raymond? Who plays him and will he return to the hit show?

He's one of the most memorable and also mysterious characters to appear on Outlander but who is Master Raymond and will he be returning to the show?

When we first meet this intriguing little man, brilliantly played by French Actor Dominique Pinon, in season two he is instantly endearing.

A fascinating character, he not only strikes up an instant relationship with Claire (his Madonna) but is able to sense her worry over his rival Comte St. Germain.

Putting her mind at ease, Master Raymond adds: "And since he’s your enemy as well, you must in point of fact be my friend."

It's a fun meeting and the first time we really see Claire at ease in Paris, a kindred spirit, Master Raymond is also a healer but there may also be more intriguing connections between the two.

History

As is hinted at in the show, the man known as Master Raymond is also a time traveler.

In fact, Diana calls him a "prehistoric time traveler", she's spoken before on her website that he comes from around 3500BC (possibly an explanation for his strange look) and that the 18th century is "not his first stop".

Describing him as a "shaman" who is born with the ability to heal through empathy, the author also explained a little bit more about his abilities.

She wrote: "He sees auras plainly; those with his power all have the blue light he has–born warriors, on the other hand, are red (so yes, “the red man” is iconic).

"He has a rather strong aversion to Vikings, owing to events that happened in his own time; hence his nervousness when he sees Jamie."

She added that he is also distantly related to both Claire and Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), yet another hint that the time-traveling ability is hereditary.

Theories

One very popular theory posited by Reddit user u/Sammi112300 is that Master Raymond is in fact Hippocrates, due to the timing of his origin and his affinity with knowledge and herbs.

Another user agreed adding that it would make sense due to the "Hippocratic oath being so important to Claire’s character even when it gets her in trouble".

Books

Both Master Raymond and Comte St Germain appear in Diana's short story "The Space Between", where the pair discuss time travel and immortality.

Diana has also hinted that the little frog-like shaman would be getting his own book.

She said: "We’ll see him again–though not in Jamie and Claire’s story, I don’t think. Master Raymond should get his own series of books, eventually.

"So in fact, we’ll see Claire, Jamie, and Geillis again, then– but as secondary characters in Master Raymond’s story (you recall, Geillis mentions having met “one other” (time-traveler) in Voyager, but doesn’t tell Claire who it is)."

Will he reappear in the show?

Anything is possible as we don't know what happens in book 10 yet, as Diana is still writing it but it as she's already hinted it might not be until he gets to see his own story written that we see him again.
