Who is Mukesh Ambani? World's eighth-richest man interested in Arsenal takeover

The world's eighth-richest man Mukesh Ambani would target taking over Arsenal ahead of the likes of Liverpool if he ever moved into the football business.

According to The Athletic, Ambani's son Akash, 31, is, reported to be a big fan of the Gunners and the London club is the one the family would go for if they did enter the football world. The Ambanis, who live in a vast 27-storey mansion in Mumbai, have also been linked with Liverpool.

Of course, Stan Kroenke may wish to hold onto the club, particularly after investing more than £270million into Mikel Arteta's project in the last two summer transfer windows alone. But he's a businessman after all, so if the Ambani family came knocking, he probably would listen to an offer at least.

With that in mind, let's take a brief look at who exactly Ambani is and his net worth to date.

Early life and career

Ambani was born on 19 April, 1957, in the British Crown colony of Aden (present-day Yemen). Ambani only briefly lived in Yemen because his father decided to move back to India in 1958 to start a trading business that focused on spices and textiles.

After attending school in Mumbai, he enrolled at Stanford University. However, he withdrew in 1980 to help his father build Reliance Industries Limited, the company which he now owns.

By 1981, the business had already expanded so that it also dealt in refining and petrochemicals. The business also included products and services in the retail and telecommunications industries. Reliance Retail Ltd., a subsidiary, is also the largest retailer in India.

After his father's death in 2002, Ambani and his younger sibling, Anil, divvied up the family empire.

Net worth

As per Forbes, Ambani is currently worth $92.8billion (£75.4billion). That could grow in the future too. That's because Ambani is pivoting Reliance into green energy. The company will be investing $80 billion (£65billion) over the next 10-15 years on renewable energy and building a new complex next to its refinery.
