John Maxwell Homa, or 'Max' to most people, is a six-time PGA Tour winner who has represented Team USA at the 2022 Presidents Cup and 2023 Ryder Cup. Since turning pro in 2013, Homa has continued to evolve as a golfer and is now one of the best in the world.
During that time, Homa has almost always had childhood friend, Joe Greiner on the bag. Believed to have met each other when they were just six years old, the pair used to play golf together at Vista Valencia Golf Club in California. In fact, Greiner has the course record at the club's par-3 golf course, which he reminds Homa about all the time.
Greiner previously worked with Homa during a brief stint in 2013 before teaming up with American Kevin Chappell for a while. In fact, Greiner only stopped because Chappell had to have back surgery, which meant the pro caddie returned to Homa's bag in 2019. He has remained there ever since.
Greiner is a very good player and at one point had dreams of becoming a professional golfer himself. He played collegiate golf at College of the Canyons - a community college in Santa Clarita, California.
Eventually he was invited to compete on the Professional Mini Tour, but took a break from it whilst he went back to get his degree. He still had aspirations of playing at the top though.
“I realized one day that I wanted to pursue this as a career and that this is something I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Greiner said to CougarNews.com. “Everything in my life was golf. If I wasn’t playing it or practicing, I was thinking about it.”
He may not have become a professional golfer but he seems to have formed a great partnership with Max as the pair have won several big PGA Tour tournaments together, including two Wells Fargo Championships, two Fortinet Championships, a Genesis Invitational (2021), and the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open.
The pair's most recent success arrived on the DP World Tour when Homa landed the 72-man Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa during November 2023.
It is worth noting that Homa has brought Jim 'Bones' Mackay onto the bag a couple of times in his career, including for the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.
This partnership came around because Homa's usual caddie, Greiner, qualified for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship which began on the Saturday of the tournament. Obviously this was a fleeting partnership because Greiner came back almost immediately.
