Football star Mason Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and grievous bodily harm (GBH) on Sunday.
The 20-year-old striker had previously been suspended by his club Manchester United after allegations surfaced on social media.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
"An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing."
Who is Mason Greenwood?
Greenwood was born and raised in the Wibsey area of Bradford in west Yorkshire.
He joined Manchester United at the age of just six, progressing through the academy ranks and featuring in the club's underage sides.
Greenwood was first called up to the Red Devils' first team for their tour to the United States in 2018.
He made his Premier League debut in 2019 at the age of just 17, becoming one of the club's youngest league debutants, and has since scored 35 goals in 129 first team appearances.
The striker has also featured for England at all the underage levels and was named in the senior team for the first time in 2020, making his debut against Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.
Greenwood currently lives in a £2million mansion in the village of Bowdon in Cheshire.
And he had signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract in 2021 to keep him at the Manchester club until 2025.
The Times reported that the deal was worth in the region of £75,000-a-week, leaving him with an annual pre-tax salary of just under £4million (€4.69million).
