Who is Margot Robbie’s husband Tom Ackerley? Barbie actress reportedly pregnant with first child

Barbie star Margot Robbie is reportedly pregnant with her first child.

The Australian Oscar-nominated actress, 34, has been married to British film producer Tom Ackerley since 2016.

People magazine reported that sources confirmed she was expecting following intense online speculation. She was seen with what appeared to be a baby bump on Sunday (July 7).

The Suicide Squad star showed her midriff while carefully boarding a boat while holidaying with her husband in Lake Como.

A source told People that Robbie had “wanted to start a family for quite some time”

Known for keeping their personal lives private, the couple did not announce their engagement. They married in a secret ceremony in Byron Bay, Australia, in December 2016, so an official announcement on their rumoured new arrival may not come soon.

Here’s what you need to know about Robbie’s husband.

Who is Tom Ackerley?

Tom Ackerley is a 34-year-old film director and producer born in Surrey on June 13, 1990.

He was brought up in Guildford, Surrey, and attended nearby Godalming College.

He began his career as a floor runner on the film Big Fat Gypsy Gangster and then became a production assistant for the 2013 film Trance. Ackerley progressed up the assistant director ladder, working on The Last Days of Mars, Pride, and eventually Suite Française, which Robbie starred in. He also became the third assistant director on the Mission: Impossible sequel, MI-5.

He and Robbie founded their LuckyChap Entertainment production company in 2014, alongside friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr.

Ackerley told MovieMaker magazine in 2020 about their goal to make female-focused films and amplify new voices.

“If we can be a company that curates new and emerging talent, and can bring them through and provide that platform to do bigger movies and studio movies, that’s ideally what we want to do,” he said.

More recently, he has gained production credits on projects with Robbie: the ice-skating biopic I, Tonya, in which his wife played the disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding; Terminal, a thriller; and the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman.

He and Robbie also worked on the 2023 film adaptation of Barbie.

How did the pair meet?

The pair met in 2014 on the set of Robbie’s film Suite Française.

“I was the ultimate single gal,” she told US Vogue. “The idea of relationships made me want to vomit.

“And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him’.

“And then it happened, and I was like, ‘of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.’”
