Veteran Spanish manager Marcelino García Toral is rumoured to be on the shortlist of candidates to take on the challenge as manager of Everton FC.
The Blues opted to relieve Frank Lampard of his duties yesterday as they look for a solution to their ongoing problems. Candidates linked to the role range from experienced managers such as Marcelino and Sean Dyche to the very opposite with Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson potentially in the picture.
Marcelino has never coached outside his native leagues yet boasts an impressive record across a variety of teams. He has won trophies with Valencia and Athletic Bilbao in a league dominated by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Prior to his 2019 Copa Del Rey win with Valencia and Supercopa de Espana triumph with Bilbao in 2021, Marcelino won the Segunda division , now known as La Liga Smartbank, with Recreativo in 2006 promoting them to the first division.
He also was promoted with Villarreal and led to the ‘Yellow Submarine’ to consistent European finishes. The La Liga Best Coach: 2017–18, left Athletic Bilbao in May 2022 and is currently without by a club.
The 57-year-old constructs his teams in a strict 4-4-2 and demands his players to be extremely fit. He conducts tests on a regular basis. Villarreal legend, Bruno Soriano, explained to ESPN: “There are tests everyday: weight, body mass.”
Marcelino's teams are known for their constant energy and pressing game whilst also are very good on the counter-attack. His sides want the possession but more importantly attack with intent when they do.
“A team with 80% possession and only three shots on goal bores me,” he has previously stated. The Spaniard is consistent with his style of football and so far it has not drastically changed at any club. The players must meet his demands in order for them to succeed.
Despite his success, given the high standards he sets on his players, there have been occasions where things have ended rather abruptly. After leading Villarreal to a Europa League semi-final, Marcelino was sacked just days before the 2016/17 season got underway after an apparent fallout with the board.
With previous links to the Tottenham job, it is clear to see why Marcelino may be on Everton's radar. His strict management style coupled with direct attacking football could be exactly what Everton need in order to escape another relegation battle.
Paul Tait and Leighton Baines are set to take charge of first-team training until a permanent manager is selected. Other names reportedly in the frame include current frontrunner Marcelo Bielsa, formerly of Leeds, and ex-Burnley boss Sean Dyche.
