Who is Kyle Dempsey? Gillingham midfielder sought for Bolton Wanderers deadline day transfer

Bolton Wanderers have targeted Kyle Dempsey as their final January transfer window acquisition.

If a deal gets over the line for the Gills man later on today, then Wanderers will have made a total of seven brand new signings this January.

Dion Charles, Aaron Morley, Jon Dadi Badvarsson and Kieran Sadlier have all been permanent arrivals this window, with Dempsey lined up as another.

Marlon Fossey and James Trafford have both been loan signings from Fulham and Manchester City respectively.

Neil Harris has now been appointed as Gills boss, which was understood to be the development which was holding up progress on the deal after Wanderers lodged a bid earlier in the window.

With Harris now installed, one of his first jobs is to oversee comings and goings at Priestfield and that will certainly include Dempsey's future, making a transfer to Bolton a potentially more likely prospect at some stage on transfer deadline day.

So who is Dempsey and what is his footballing background?

The 26-year-old Cumbrian came through the youth team ranks at Carlisle United.

He made a total of 51 appearances for the Brunton Park side and scored 11 goals in the process between 2014 and 2015.

In the summer of 2015, he moved to Yorkshire club Huddersfield Town and played 24 games for the Terriers, scoring once.

In 2016, Dempsey spent a season out on loan at Fleetwood Town and after a successful campaign, signed for the Cod Army on a permanent basis in the summer of 2017.

In total, Dempsey made a total of 146 appearances for the Cod Army and found the back of the net six times.

He moved to Gillingham in the summer of 2020 and was installed as the Kent club's captain in his first season at the Gills and offers from various clubs have been turned down in both transfer windows in 2021.

He has played a total of 66 times for Gillingham and scored nine times in his season-and-a-half with the club.

Dempsey played the entire game when Wanderers played the Gills at the University of Bolton Stadium earlier in the season and scored in the 2-2 draw.
