Who is Joao Gomes? Brazilian has Liverpool transfer desire after stating "dream" ambition

Joao Gomes could be the next Brazilian to grace the Premier League having declared his interest in moving to Liverpool.

The highly-rated midfield plies his trade in his homeland with Flamengo but appears to have ambitions that extend beyond playing in South America. At just 21, he already has over 100 appearances for his current outfit, with his stock on the rise.

Manchester United have been credited with interest, but Gomes has namechecked Liverpool as the side he would most like to move to if he did head to England's top flight. “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football," he said in a Q&A on social media.

Who is Joao Gomes?

It is the question many are asking. Brazilian football is always unearthing gems and Gomes could be the next cab off the rank. Less than a month after stating his desire to one day cross the Atlantic, the 21-year-old penned a new long-term deal with his club.

His contract extension with Flamengo ties him down until 2027 - his previous deal was up in 2025. That will no doubt up his transfer fee, but probably won't stop any major European outfit striking a deal should they pursue Gomes.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Gomes made his debut for Flamengo in 2020 having come through their academy system. He claimed the Brazilian Serie A title in 2020 and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2021, whilst he's also won regional Campeonato Carioca titles in 2020 and 2021.

Gomes is known for his ability to win the ball back in the middle of the pitch, drawing comparisons with Liverpool and Brazil star Fabinho. He's also earned praise for his quality in possession, which furthers his appeal.

Despite his swift ascent, Gomes is yet to earn an international call-up. A report in CaughtOffside claims Liverpool scouts 'have monitored' Gomes but warns that many other European giants are also keeping tabs on the situation.

The Reds have been linked with midfield recruits as they deal with persistent injury issues and an ageing squad profile. Several of their leading lights are into their 30s, so Gomes could inject some much-needed youth as Jurgen Klopp looks to refresh his options.
