Who is JK Rowling's first husband? Harry Potter author's marriage before finding fame

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been married twice and her first husband was Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes.

The writer, 54, moved to Portugal when she was 25 and working as a teacher giving English as a foreign language classes.

She met Arantes during a night out in Porto and they went on to strike up a relationship and move into together.

In an interview with the Express, Arantes described their relationship as "intense and passionate".

He added: "We were simply two young, independent people enjoying life."

After several months of dating Rowling discovered she was pregnant and later suffered a devastating miscarriage.

She fell conceived again several months later, and Arantes proposed. They went on to marry in October 1992.

The author gave birth to their daughter, Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes, in July 1993.

However, the marriage crumbled and the couple split just four months after Jessica was born and Rowling moved back to the UK.

She set up home in Edinburgh as a single mum and began working hard on the series of books that eventually became Harry Potter.

Speaking to The Times, she previously said of her doomed marriage; "I married on Oct. 16, 1992. I left on Nov. 17, 1993. So that was the duration of what I considered to be the marriage.

"Obviously, you do not leave a marriage after that very short period of time unless there are serious problems. I’m not the kind of person who bales out without there being serious problems.

"My relationship before that lasted seven years. I’m a long-term girl. And I had a baby with this man. But it didn’t work. And it was clear to me that it was time to go, and so I went.

"I never regretted it."

Rowling went on to marry her second husband, Scottish doctor Neil Murray, in 2001.

She had two more children, David, born in 2003, and Mackenzie, who was born in 2005.

Jessica is now based in Portugal and runs a successful YouTube account.
