Who is Jannik Sinner? Tennis player takes on Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon

Professional tennis player Jannik Sinner went head to head with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon this afternoon.

The athlete ended up losing the match, giving Djokovic his ninth Wimbledon final to date.

But who exactly is Jannik Sinner?

Here is everything we know about the professional sportsman.

Who is Jannik Sinner?

Jannik Sinner, 21, is a professional tennis player from Italy, who has won several ATP singles and a double.

The Innichen native was born in the predominantly German-speaking region of South Tyrol in northern Italy. His tennis journey began at a young age, alongside skiing and football.

Aged 13, Sinner decided to give up skiing and football on a professional level in favour of tennis.

He began playing on the International Tennis Federation’s Junior Circuit in 2016 before moving on to the professional tour after 2017.

The sportsman won his first ATP Challenger title in Bergamo in February 2019 when he was 17, becoming the youngest Italian to ever win a Challenger title in history.

By the age of 18, he was in the world’s top 100 and by 20 he had reached the top 10.

The opponent he faced in Wimbledon today, Djokovic, is actually an admirer of his. Talking about the tennis star, he’s previously shared: “He likes to play on quick surfaces because he likes to be aggressive and take control of the point,

“From both forehand and backhand, he’s smashing the ball really, really hard, trying to be the one that is going to dictate the point from early on. I know his game well.”

Jannik Sinner’s personal life

The successful athlete currently resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

He has been dating Maria Braccini for three years. She is a 23-year-old Italian model and influencer.

Braccini has made a name for herself in the fashion world over the years.

While Sinner, who speaks Italian, German, and English, has been endorsed by the likes of Nike, Rolex, Gucci, and Lavazza so far.

He is still a skiing fanatic and follows football closely, with AC Milan being his favourite club.

As for his tennis heroes, the athlete has shared that he looks up to Andreas Seppi, Roger Federer — and Novak Djokovic.
