Who is Irish actress Charlie Murphy? From Love/Hate to steamy new Netflix series Obsession

With Netflix's brand-new erotic mini-series Obsession having dropped, fans are all asking themselves who the lead Irish actress Charlie Murphy is.

The 35-year-old, who previously starred in shows such as Love/Hate, Peaky Blinders and Happy Valley, plays the part of Anna, who is having an affair with her partner's father, a successful surgeon.

The four-part series tells the tale of chaotic obsession, with a very raunchy storyline, starring the Wexford actress.

Murphy won the 2013 Irish Film and Television Award for Best TV Actress for her role in renowned Irish crime drama Love/Hate. But what else do we know about the life of Charlie Murphy - from where she grew up to how she got her big break in acting?

Home town

The Enniscorthy native, was born to parents Brenda and Pat Murphy, who owned a hair salon. Charlie has five siblings and at the age of 12, she moved to Wexford town with her family.

Her family lived near to a theatre in Wexford, which helped light an insatiable spark for the stage

She got to grips with the trade of acting when attending the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, from 2006 to 2008, with her first foray into her career being in 2009 in the TV show The Clinic, where she played Natasha Halpin.

Breakout role

It wasn't until 2010, when she got her real breakout role in Love/Hate playing Siobhan Delaney.

She told the RTÉ Guide recently that she had no idea how big her role was going to be in the show, and if she had of, she may have "fecked up" the audition, she admitted.

She also picked up a Best Actress in a Lead Role at the 2015 Irish Film and Television Awards for the role.

She won two more IFTA Awards, one for Best Actress in a Supporting Role as Ann Gallagher in the BBC One drama series Happy Valley, and another in 2018 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role as Jessie Eden in the Peaky Blinders.

Charlie's love for the stage never faltered despite her starring TV roles. She has extensive theatre credits including most recently acting in The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh (West End) in 2018.

Relationship

She is in a long-term relationship with British director Sam Yates, who also has an extensive list of stage and TV work to his name. The happy pair have been pictured out at various awards nights through the years.

During the pandemic, Charlie and Sam bought a house together in London where they live together.
