Who is Holly Cairns - the TD tipped to be the next Social Democrats leader

Holly Cairns has been hotly tipped to become the next leader of the Social Democrats at just 33 years of age.

Co-leaders of the party Catherine Murphy and Roisin Shortall announced they were standing down at a press conference yesterday. And prominent Dublin Central TD Gary Gannon is expected to rule himself out of the leadership race which will clear the path for Ms Cairns to take the reigns.

She upset all the odds in 2020 when she took her seat on the eight count. Before she entered the Dail, she took a seat on Cork County Council by just one vote.

The firebrand socialist has gone from strength to strength as a TD with a series of string media performances. Clips of her speaking in the Dail or on TV chat shows on issues such as the Mother and Baby Home scandal are regularly widely shared on Twitter.

Ms Cairns also has a podcast, called Inside the Chamber, which helps her to communicate her work with her followers. However, there hasn't been a new episode uploaded since November last year.

She is originally from Mizen, Co Cork and has been a longstanding community activist in the area. Deputy Cairns has an MSc in Organic Horticulture and setup an organic farming company, the Brown Envelope Seeds.

Her father setup the Bantry Literary Festival and her mother established the Skibbereen Farmers' Market.
