On Tuesday, July 4 former GMTV star Fiona Phillips made the tragic announcement that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The journalist, who has been a regular face on our screens since the early ‘90s, said that the disease had “ravaged her family” and now it has come for her - her mother, father, uncle and grandparents had Alzheimer’s.
In an interview with The Daily Mirror, Fiona described how she was informed she had the illness 18 months ago, having had months of brain fog and anxiety. She added: “And all over the country there are people of all different ages whose lives are being affected by it – it’s heartbreaking. I just hope I can help find a cure which might make things better for others in the future.”
To many people Fiona will best be remembered for her work on breakfast television, joining GMTV in 1993 as an entertainment correspondent. Between 1997-2008 she was the main anchor on the show.
