Who is Georgia Harrison? Love Island star said she almost became Labour MP

TV personality Georgia Harrison claims to have discussed "serious conversations" about running for the Labour Party's Essex seat with MPs.

The 28-year-old told the Sun that she believed "more normal people should enter politics" in Britain.

She said: "I had serious conversations with a couple of Labour MPs about if I could run for Essex, and they said it would be possible.

"They told me to go away and think about it. They said if I was being serious about running for an MP it is something that they would support me with.

"I think also for little girls growing up seeing someone like me running for an MP would be quite inspiring. We need more normal people going into politics."

Harrison has campaigned on violence against women and girls - and hopes a run for Parliament would inspire girls.

The constituency that Harrison may run in and her intention to run for Parliament have still not been confirmed.

Who is Georgia Harrison?

Born in Redbridge, London, Harrison is a television personality, best known for appearing on Love Island in 2017.

Since then, she has made appearances on a number of other television programmes, such as The Challenge: War of the Worlds and The Challenge: War of the Worlds 2 (2019), and Celebrity Ex on the Beach (2020).

In terms of upcoming projects, she is set to appear on the sixth series of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

She was employed as a personal assistant before making an appearance on reality television.

In 2021, she revealed to the Daily Mirror that she struggled with undiagnosed ADHD as a child and a teenager, leading to her expulsion from school.

Online Safety Bill

Harrison's ex-partner, Stephen Bear, was jailed earlier this year for posting intimate footage of her online.

In 2020, she filed a criminal complaint against him. Bear had recorded them having sex using his garden's CCTV cameras, transmitted the video to a friend, and uploaded it to OnlyFans - all without Harrison's permission.

He was given a 21-month prison sentence in March during his sentencing hearing for voyeurism and revealing personal, explicit photos and videos.

Harrison claimed that the years she spent waiting for her case to be heard had been "detrimental to my career and my mental health, which was really hard for me" when she spoke earlier this month at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

In order to spare other victims of sexual assault from having to wait as long as she did, she also demanded that they be given priority in the legal system.

June saw changes to the Online Safety Bill that would make it simpler to punish individuals for distributing so-called revenge porn, which is defined as releasing a private photo or video online without permission.

The modification eliminated the need for prosecutors to demonstrate that offenders meant to cause suffering to prove their case and get a conviction.

Harrison fronted a documentary explaining the case called Revenge Porn: Georgia vs Bear, which is available on ITVX.

How do you become an MP?

To be elected as a member of Parliament, a candidate must be a party member and be selected by the party for a specific seat before they can run in a general election.
