Who is Gareth Ward? Everything about the head chef at Michelin-starred Ynyshir

The food scene in Wales is booming and there are some fantastic restaurants to eat.

And one of the best places comes in the form of a restaurant and rooms overlooking the Cambrian Mountains - .

It's a foodie haven in Eglwys Fach, near Machynlleth, and the head chef is making a real name for himself.

Gareth Ward has already helped the restaurant pick up a Michelin star, which it's retained for a number of years, as well as five AA Rosettes.

Who is Gareth Ward?

Gareth Ward is the chef patron of one Wales' best restaurants, Ynyshir Restaurant and Rooms.

He's originally from the north-east of England and has won a number of awards, including the Good Food Guide Chef of the Year 2019, The Caterer's 2018 ‘Chef to Watch’ and Good Food Guide's 2015 ‘Chef to Watch’.

What's his food like?

"Ingredient Led, Flavour Driven, Fat Fuelled, Meat Obsessed".

That's the unapologetic mantra that's written on the wall of the restaurant as you walk in.

The restaurant was listed in the 2019 Good Food Guide - fifth place in Top 50 Restaurants with a score of 9 for food.

They say it's all about great food, great music and amazing drinks. Gareth calls it ‘fun dine’ rather than ‘fine dine’.

He's also renowned for his use of Japanese techniques and ingredients like miso, dashi, mirin and soy which enable him to get as much flavour as possible out of the other ingredients and keep the dishes light.

It is all about meat and fish and how best to make the ingredients shine.

At Ynyshir, there's a set menu made up of around 20 courses.

Each course is a small portion of mouth-watering food, allowing the team to show of their culinary finesse.

From the simple and humble to more complicated creations, you'll experience an extensive range of tastes and textures over the course of a single meal.

Where have I seen him before?

If you haven't been to the restaurant yet, but you think you recognise him, you may be right.

He's made TV appearances before gracing James Martin's Saturday Kitchen, most recently appearing on Masterchef: The Professionals.

Gareth will be on James Martin's Saturday Kitchen on Saturday, February 1 at 9.30am until 11.40am on ITV 1.
