Who is Ethan Laird, the exciting Man Utd kid Swansea City are set to sign

Swansea City are set to sign Ethan Laird from Manchester United.

The 20-year-old defender played under Russell Martin at MK Dons and is poised to link up with his former boss in south Wales for the duration of the 2021/22 campaign.

But what can Swansea expect from the loan man?

We spoke to Dominic Booth who covers the Red Devils for our sister title Manchester Evening News to find out more.

What type of player is Laird and which positions can he cover?

He's an attacking young right-back with bags of pace, but also plenty of strength and a good ability on the ball.

He will play mainly on the right, either in a back four or in a five. He's probably more effective when given license to get forward.

How highly do United rate him?

He was once billed as the most exciting player of his generation at United, even surpassing Mason Greenwood for that title at one stage.

He's still got two years left on his United contract, so there's a chance he could return to get senior minutes at United if his Swansea loan goes well.

What are his strengths/weaknesses?

Injuries have hampered Laird quite a bit already in his young career, so that may be a worry for Russell Martin's side.

He also needs to keep working on the defensive side of his game, which will be a test for him playing against Championship wingers.

What can Swansea fans expect from him?

The way Laird hit the ground running at MK Dons last season, you wouldn't be surprised to see him shine at Swansea. He's always had the talent.

He just needs to stay fit, stay focused and he can be a big success in the Championship.

Martin obviously likes him and backs him to succeed, so it could be the reunion of a perfect marriage at the Liberty Stadium.
