Who is Ekow Essuman? Nottingham-based fighter gets Tyson Fury v Dillian Whyte undercard chance

Although fight fans across the United Kingdom and across the world will tune in to watch Tyson Fury's showdown with Dillian Whyte on Saturday night, the undercard offers a platform for new contenders to make a name for themselves.

The initial bout that was scheduled between Anthony Cacace and Jonathan Romero has been chalked off the undercard, with Ekow Essuman's meeting with Darren Tetley being shifted up the bill.

Essuman is yet to lose a fight, with the welterweight boasting a record of 16 wins and seven knockouts from his 16 professional encounters.

For the Ghaniain-born Essuman, the undercard at Wembley will represent one of the biggest stages he has fought on, with the national stadium likely to be pretty full by the time the two men take to the ring.

The fight was initially scheduled to be a week on from the glittering Wembley date, but the postponement on the undercard has prompted the showdown to be moved forward. As such, both fighters will have the chance to showcase their talent in front of a huge watching audience.

Essuman is the current holder of the Commonwealth title, having won the prize in July 2021 with a win over Chris Jenkins. On Saturday, he will undertake his second defence of the belt, having previously beat Danny Ball via sixth-round knockout in September.

While the win over Ball was impressive, Saturday's encounter will represent a big jump up in class for Essuman.

At 33, his unbeaten record is undoubtedly something to savour. However, if he holds genuine ambitions to press on to the next level in the sweet science stakes, then a victory feels imperative under the Wembley arch.

Essuman is the big favourite for the encounter though. Nicknamed "the Engine", thee undefeated fighter is renowned for his stamina and punching flurries

The decision to rejig the card left Cacace fuming on social media, with Romero unable to secure a visa that would enbale him to fight in the United Kingdom.

"Actually can’t believe I’m writing this status," he said on Twitter. "Been away from my children and home for 3 months only to be told that I will not be fighting on this show."
