Who is Daniel Kinahan? The man who helped make Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury superfight

Daniel Kinahan has been all over the news and airwaves since Tyson Fury namechecked him earlier this week.

Fury praised the Irishman for making his superfight with Anthony Joshua a reality.

The fight, should it eventually happen in 2021, would be one of the biggest boxing events in the history of the sport.

However, ever since that announcement there has been huge criticism from Irish quarters that Kinahan is becoming a respected boxing name.

Here's everything that has been said in the past week.

Kinahan labelled cartel boss in Dail

Daniel Kinahan was called out as a crime cartel boss on the floor of the Dáil who is trying to "re-brand himself as a boxing promoter".

And Alan Kelly has called on the Taoiseach to “intervene” after gangland chief Mr Kinahan was lauded as a successful international boxing promoter this week.

The Labour leader told the Dáil that people in the boxing and sports TV industries need to know about Mr Kinahan’s sick legacy ahead of the huge boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury in the UAE that he is promoting.

Mr Kelly said the country “owes it to the victims of the cartel” to let the international sporting community know the history of Mr Kinahan, one of Ireland’s most notorious criminals.

Varadkar contacts UAE

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in reply told Mr Kelly that he has been in touch with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities to warn them about the promoter’s dodgy past.

Mr Kelly said: “There is an individual from our country who, according to the High Court, is a very senior figure in organised crime on a global scale.

"According to the Criminal Assets Bureau, he has controlled and managed the operations of the Kinahan organised crime group for some time.

“He’s now re-branding himself in the Middle East as a boxing promoter and one of the most famous individuals involved in that has described him as ‘a smart, able and honest man.’

“Taoiseach, our country has to intervene here."

What other sports is Kinahan involved with?

As well as having a relationship with top boxers like Fury, the Dubliner is linked to a number of other sports stars.

He has been mentioned numerous times and pictured with Liverpool UFC fighter Darren Till who has previously defended him.

While more recently he has gotten into the mixed martial arts world in the UAE.

Last month Daniel Kinahan heaped praise on a new link-up between MTK Global and two mixed martial arts promotions based in the Middle East.

Fight promoters MTK have teamed up with Brave Combat Federation and KHK Sports with the aim of securing big fights in the region.

KHK Sports is run by a member of the royal family of Bahrain, Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and has boxing, MMA and wrestling among its stables.

They list Kinahan as a 'Special Advisor' to the organisation.
