Who is Captain America in Falcon and the Winter Soldier? John F Walker explained

*Spoiler alert for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1*

The first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, entitled New World Order, features Sam Wilson ( Anthony Mackie ) choosing to place Captain America’s shield in a museum.

He tells old Avengers teammate James "Rhodey" Rhodes ( Don Cheadle ) that the shield belonged to Steve Rogers and it isn't his to have.

However, by the end of the episode, it seems that the US government has taken matters into their own hands as a man proclaimed as Captain America is introduced to the world in a press conference, credited as John F. Walker (played by Wyatt Russell).

As Sam and Bucky Barnes ( Sebastian Stan ) adjust to this major twist you may be wondering just who exactly John F. Walker is.

Here’s all we know about Walker heading into the future episodes.

Who is Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? John F. Walker explained

John F. Walker is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and was introduced in the Captain America comics as a nationalistic villain named Super Patriot in 1986.

He later went on to replace Steve Rogers as Captain America and became a more heroic character in 1987.

Walker later took up the superhero mantle of US Agent, wearing a discarded uniform of Captain America’s and even became a member of the Avengers.

However, we can expect some changes with the television series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Marvel describes Walker in the series as a high-ranking member of the United States military.

He is described as "patriotic, strong, good-intentioned, and every bit of him will be put to the test as he tries to team up with Sam and Bucky to protect the world from a new threat."

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, head writer on the series Malcolm Spellman reveals some differences to the Walker of comic book lore.

He said: "We shifted away from the books a little bit, so we added some very, very different dimensions, especially once Wyatt got involved and started really inhabiting the character."

Spellman added: "But the spirit, all you've got to do is read Marvel comics and then imagine that we didn't do half of what's in the books."

We’ll have to wait and see what to expect from the new 'Captain America'!
