Who is backing who in Tory leadership race? Full list and how to search your MP

Six MPs are still slugging it out for backers in their race to replace Boris Johnson as Tory leader - and Prime Minister.

Rishi Sunak was the clear frontrunner and was expected to be fighting it out against one other contender in a vote by Conservative Party members.

But Penny Mordaunt has surged into a strong second place in the first round of MP ballots, with 67 MP votes compared to Mr Sunak's 88. Some believe she could face off against Liz Truss, on 50 backers, after further ballots next week.

Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Suella Braverman are still in the contest but Jeremy Hunt was knocked out, throwing his support behind Jeremy Hunt. Nadhim Zahawi was knocked out.

Three more hopefuls - Grant Shapps, Rehman Chishti and Sajid Javid - were knocked out before the contest even began, with the Tories’ 1922 Committee setting a tough threshold to get on the ballot.

MPs needed 20 backers each by 6pm on Tuesday 12 July - excluding themselves - before they even faced the first knockout vote by MPs.

From now, MPs will vote in rounds, with one candidate being eliminated from the ballot each time until only two are left to put to the wider membership after July 21.

Boris Johnson refused to publicly back any of the people who want to succeed him. "My job is really just to oversee the process in the next few weeks, and I'm sure that the outcome will be good," he told broadcasters. Theresa May also declined to say how she voted.

But Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng and Boris Johnson allies Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries have already backed Liz Truss while key ex-Cabinet ally Michael Gove - once branded a "kingmaker" - has backed Kemi Badenoch.

We’ve rounded up the state of play with who’s backing who in the leadership contest - and included a search tool so you can find who your MP is for.
