Who is Arne Slot? The Erik ten Hag rival who is favourite to become next Leeds manager

Arne Slot is the new name in the frame to become the next Leeds United manager, with the Feyenoord boss having become the favourite to replace Jesse Marsch at Elland Road.

The Feyenoord boss has entered the fray ahead of Leeds' trip to face Manchester United on Wednesday night, with Chris Armas currently taking charge of the Whites. Marsch was sacked on Sunday following defeat to Nottingham Forest, with the 1-0 loss continuing Leeds' run of not winning in the Premier League since the World Cup.

Slot and United manager Erik ten Hag were rivals in the Netherlands, with Feyenoord consistently challenging ten Hag's Ajax side, with the 44-year old winning the prestigious Rinus Michels coach of the year award in the 2021/22 season. This was after his side reached the final of the Europa Conference League last season.

Dutch coaches are largely well regarded and are known for adopting a possession based style of play, with bosses such as ten Hag also being able to implement pressing into their systems in recent years. Leeds attempted to play a high pressing game under Marsch but were often exposed by their lack of control on games and this could be a trend which Slot is brought in to redress.

Having managed AZ Alkmaar to great success, he was brought in to manage Feyenoord from the start of the 2021/22 season and assisted by Robin van Persie guided the Rotterdam based side to third in the table as well as the aforementioned European final.

Slot has entered the running for the job, with odds provided by William Hill handing the Dutchman a 4/11 chance of taking over the club, with Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola at 5/4. Previous favourite Carlos Corberan has slipped to 25/1 having signed a new contract with West Brom on Tuesday night.

While there have been no concrete talks reported, the strong favour he has gained with the bookies suggest that a move could be imminent and a new coach in the Premier League could shake up an already fascinating relegation battle.
