Who is Alex Burghart? The Tory frontbencher facing Angela Rayner at PMQs

Tory MP Alex Burghart is going up against Deputy PM Angela Rayner at Prime Minister’s Question on Wednesday.

The shadow chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster is standing in for Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

Ms Badenoch has chosen not to appoint an official deputy and will instead nominate a rotation of shadow ministers to stand in for her at PMQs when the Prime Minister is away.

Sir Keir Starmer is not taking part in the weekly Q&A in the Commons because he is en route back from Brazil after spending two days at the G20 summit in Rio.

Who is Alex Burghart?

Mr Burghart has been the MP for the Brentwood and Ongar seat - considered a safe Tory constituency - since June 2017 having previously been director of Strategy and Advocacy for the Children's Commissioner for England.

A history academic, he entered national politics as a policy adviser to then children’s minister Tim Loughton in 2008 and went on to become a special advisor to former PM Theresa May.

At the 2015 election he fought the Islington North seat for the Tory party, standing against then Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn.

He told the Islington Gazette: “If I am elected, the first thing I will do is: Dance a jig (and try to resuscitate Jeremy Corbyn).

“After that’s done I want to campaign in Parliament for a raft of social policies to improve education, support local families and help more people get into work.”

He told the local paper that he was in favour of assisted dying “but only for people with terminal conditions”.

Mr Burghart came second in the north London seat, increasing the Conservative share of the vote from 14.2% to 17.2% at the election.

At the 2024 general election, the 47-year-old was re-elected in his constituency with a decreased vote share of 36.7% and a decreased majority of 5,980.

Earlier this month, Ms Badenoch appointed him shadow chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster.

He is a former vice chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on boxing.
