Who England will face in World Cup last 16 after win over Wales in final Group B game

England look likely to secure their place in the World Cup round of 16 stage as they lead Wales 3-0 in the second half of their final fixture in Group B. The Three Lions look set to go unbeaten in their group stage fixtures after beating Iran, drawing 0-0 against the USA and currently lead Wales.

Gareth Southgate's side have reached a semi-final and final in their last two major tournaments and will be hoping to go all the way and win the World Cup in Qatar. England enjoyed a perfect start to the World Cup after beating Iran 6-2, with Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and Chelsea's Raheem Sterling both getting on the score sheet.

The Three Lions faced a more difficult test in their second group stage match as they fought to secure a 0-0 draw against the USA after being second-best for the majority of the game. With the Three Lions leading fellow home nation Wales, England look set to face the runners-up from Group A in the round of 16, Senegal.

After qualifying top of Group B, England are set to face Senegal in the next round as they enter the knockout stages of the tournament in Qatar. The World Cup round of 16 fixtures are set to take place from Saturday, December 3 through to Tuesday, December 6.

The FIFA World Cup is different to the UEFA Champions League with specific groups being paired up against each other for the latter rounds, creating two sides to the draw later in the tournament. England feature in Group B and can only face qualifying teams from Group A, which featured the Netherlands, Ecuador, Senegal and tournament hosts, Qatar.

England are now likely to avoid drawing a tougher tie against the Netherlands after Louis van Gaal's side finished top of Group A. The Netherlands beat Qatar in their final Group A fixture as Senegal beat Ecuador to secure their place as runners-up in Group A.

FIFA use the following order to decide which team will finish above another should they find themselves with the same points tally:

1) Overall group goal difference
2) Overall group goals scored
3) Head to head (H2H) result
4) H2H goal difference in all matches between the teams still level
5) H2H goals scored in all matches between the teams still level
6) Fair play points
7) Drawing of lots

Gareth Southgate will need to prepare his team for a difficult test in the round of 16 tie against Senegal.
