Who could England play in the World Cup quarter-finals if they beat Senegal?

England could meet reigning champions France in the World Cup quarter-finals should they overcome Senegal.

Marcus Rashford moved top in the hunt for the Golden Boot as his brace ended Wales' fading hopes of knockout qualification. Phil Foden also picked up his first goal in international football's most prestigious tournament.

The Three Lions appeased doubters after their drab goalless draw with USA in the second group match. Christian Pulisic's brave effort meant that they would be following England into the next stage of the World Cup.

Whilst they face Group A winners, Holland, Gareth Southgate's eyes are on the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions. Senegal booked their place in the Round of 16 with their 2-1 win over Ecuador.

Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring from the spot before the South American's pulled themselves level - a result that would've meant they'd finish second.

However, Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly volleyed home the winning goal to send Aliou Cisse's side into the knockout rounds for the first time since 2002 - the second time in their history at the World Cup.

They came into the competition without AFCON hero and former Liverpool star Sadio Mane but they will be far from pushovers.

Elsewhere in the knockout stages, France finished top of Group D despite their shock defeat to Tunisia. It's unlikely that Didier Deschamps will lose sleep over the loss after ringing wholesale changes to his side.

Australia, on the other hand, defied expectations by beating Denmark thanks to Mathew Leckie's goal. They dusted themselves down after their sobering defeat to the eventual group winners with Mitchell Duke's first-half header securing just their, then, third win at the World Cup.

Should England avoid an upset and France overcome their round of 16 opponents, they could meet the 2018 winners.

Les Bleus' opponents have been confirmed after the final games in Group C took place on Wednesday night. Argentina defeated Poland to confirm their place in the knockout stage and set up a tie against Australia, despite a missed penalty from Lionel Messi.

And they were joined in the next round by Poland in a stunning turn of events, with Mexico looking like they would lose out on the last 16 via their fair play record. Poland and Mexico were level on points, goal difference, goals scored and their head-to-head record going into the closing stages.

However, a late goal from Saudi Arabia made it just 2-1 to Mexico, and so Poland headed through on goal difference. That means Poland will face France in the last 16, setting up a possible quarter-final against Southgate's side.
