
Largely through the NFL Draft, Colts GM Chris Ballard has built one of the most athletic teams in football. But how are we able to quantify this?
With the help of Kent Lee Platte, who created the Relative Athletic Score (RAS), we can not only compare the athleticism of two players but the overall athleticism of each team based upon measurables and athletic testing numbers from the NFL Combine and Pro Days.
For example, if two receivers measure in differently and one performs really well in the 40-yard dash but the other does better on the agility drills–who is the better athlete? That’s where RAS comes into play, converting all of that information to an easily comparable number that ranges from 0-10. In short, the higher the RAS, the better the athlete with 5.0 considered average.
RAS does take into account historical results, and it is specific to each position group, so a wide receiver and a nose tackle could have the same score because it’s ‘relative’ to the position they play.
