THE Scottish Conservatives hold five of Scotland’s 57 Westminster seats.
The Tories won just 121 seats in the 2024 General Election, five of which were north of the Border.
After the 2019 General Election, the Scottish Tories had six MPs, so the more recent Westminster vote represented a loss of one.
The five Scottish Tory MPs at Westminster are:
- John Lamont, MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk
- Andrew Bowie, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine
- David Mundell, MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale
- John Cooper, MP for Dumfries and Galloway
- Harriet Cross, MP for Gordon and Buchan
John Lamont, MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk
John Lamont has served as an MP since being elected in 2017 in the snap General Election. He had held a seat in the Scottish parliament since 2007, which he resigned in order to run for Westminster.
Lamont was a minister in the Scotland Office in Rishi Sunak’s government. After the 2024 General Election saw Scottish secretary Alister Jack resign as an MP, Lamont became the Conservatives’ shadow secretary of state for Scotland.
Andrew Bowie, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine
Andrew Bowie has been a Tory MP since first being elected in 2017. He is a former vice-chair of the Tory Party, and served as a parliamentary private secretary to prime ministerBowie was a nuclear minister in Rishi Sunak’s government, but had responsibility over networks taken from him after campaigning in the area. He is now the Conservatives’ shadow veterans’ minister.
David Mundell, MP for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale
Conservative cabinet minister.
David Mundell has been an MP since he was first elected in 2005. From 2015 to 2019, he served as the Scottish secretary. In 2016, he came out as gay, becoming the first openly gayBefore his election to Westminster, Mundell was an MSP for the south of Scotland region from 1999 to 2005. His son, Oliver Mundell, represents the Dumfriesshire constituency at Holyrood.
John Cooper, MP for Dumfries and Galloway
John Cooper was elected to be the MP for Dumfries and Galloway in 2024, replacing his former boss Alister Jack. Cooper, a former Daily Mail journalist, had been hired to be a media adviser for the Scottish secretary and was based out of the UK Government's Queen Elizabeth House in Edinburgh.
Cooper won around 9000 fewer votes in 2024 than Jack had in 2019, managing to beat the SNP in Dumfries and Galloway by a little more than 900 votes.
Harriet Cross, MP for Gordon and Buchan
Harriet Cross was elected to represent the Tories for Gordon and Buchan in the 2024 General Election, narrowly beating the SNP’s incumbent Richard Thomson by around 880 votes. She had previously stood for the Tories in Aberdeen Donside in the 2021 Holyrood election but lost to the SNP.
Cross worked as a rural surveyor in Aberdeenshire before her election, telling the Scottish Farmer that the role allowed her to see “first-hand every day the fantastic work being carried out by our farmers, land managers and rural communities across Gordon and Buchan”.
