White Sox Closer Liam Hendriks Provides Update on Cancer Diagnosis

Two days after sharing an encouraging message about having non-Hodgkins lymphoma, White Sox closer Liam Hendriks provided the best update of all: he’s finally cancer-free.

In an uplifting Instagram post, the three-time All-Star shared an inspirational message detailing his bout with cancer over the past five months, and expressed gratitude to his family and medical staff that helped treat him. He also posted a video of himself ringing the “victory bell,” signifying the milestone.

“These past five months have been both the quickest and slowest of my life. Being able to ring this victory bell has been one of the most emotional things I’ve ever done,” Hendriks wrote. “I cannot thank my team of doctors and nurses enough for coming up with the best medical plan for me. No words can express the gratitude I have for them saving my life.”

It’s unclear when Hendriks will be able to return to the field for the White Sox, but he said on Monday that he hoped to rejoin the team “soon” ahead of his final round of chemotherapy.

Hendriks joined Chicago prior to the 2021 season. He’s been an All-Star in each of the past two years, and owns a 2.26 ERA and 114 saves over 226 games since the start of the ’19 campaign.
