The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood has received an apology from Saturday Night Live after the comedy show mocked her in a sketch.
During the latest episode, a pre-taped skit called The White POTUS went to air. Based on familiar characters in The White Lotus, the sketch took the piss out of Donald Trump by comparing him to the spiralling character of Timothy Ratliff (Jason Isaacs).
While most characters were making fun of political figures, there was one moment where SNL cast member Sarah Sherman seemed to impersonate Wood, who plays the beloved character of Chelsea in The White Lotus season three.
During the sketch, Sherman donned some fake teeth and quipped, “Fluoride? What’s that?” in a terrible Mancunian accent.
As you might be able to expect, Wood didn’t take too kindly to the series clearly mocking her appearance.
“I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny,” Wood confirmed on her Instagram Stories.
“Such a shame cos’ I had such a great time watching it a couple of weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure — that’s what the show is about. But there must be a cleverer, more nuanced and less cheap way?”
Wood wasn’t the only one who felt that the portrayal was a bit mean-spirited. Fans were quick to agree with Wood’s take on the situation, flooding her DMs with supportive comments.
“I agree — everyone else in that parody was a political figure who was being mocked. The one character who wasn’t political was Chelsea, and they were clearly just taking the piss out of your appearance/accent which is extremely c*nty and uncalled for,” said one fan, whose DM Wood shared on her IG stories.
Two hours after Wood shared her opinion of the sketch on her Stories, she shared an update.
“I’ve had apologies from SNL,” she wrote, on a filtered selfie.
Wood also thanked her followers for backing her up.
“Omg I’ve got thousands of messages in agreement with me since posting that,” she wrote.
“Thanks guys, glad I said something.”
Aimee Lou Wood played Chelsea in The White Lotus season three. Fans have praised Wood for her performance in the series, and her character quickly became a fan favourite for her woo-woo antics, devoted love for her boyfriend Rick (Walton Goggins) and straight up good vibes.
Before The White Lotus, Wood garnered a pretty solid fan-base for her work on Sex Education.
