The Wall Street Journal conducted interviews with approximately 45 individuals, including both Republicans and Democrats who have been in meetings with President Biden or briefed about those meetings. While most of the criticism in the report came from Republicans, some Democrats also noted signs of aging in Biden.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, was among those who provided on-the-record comments critical of Biden. However, White House aides were quick to point out that McCarthy had previously praised Biden's negotiating abilities. The White House spokesperson, Andrew Bates, emphasized that numerous congressional Republicans, foreign leaders, and nonpartisan national security experts have lauded Biden as a savvy and effective leader with a strong legislative record.
The timing of these concerns is notable as age has become a focal point in the upcoming presidential election.
