White House explains why Joe Biden has those mysterious lines on his face

The White House confirms that President Joe Biden has recently started using a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea after strap indentations were noticed on both sides of his face on Wednesday morning.

The nation's oldest president, Joe Biden, who is 80, has a history of sleep apnea. Biden's chronic sleep apnea problem was revealed by medical documents that were made public in 2008.

He used a CPAP machine last night, which is common for people with that history, according to White House spokesman Andrew Bates. Joe Biden has begun using a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine to treat his sleep apnea. It is critical to understand what sleep apnea is and how a CPAP machine is used.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing pauses and resumes at irregular intervals. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the muscles of the throat collapse and block the passage of oxygen into the respiratory system. According to ResMed’s Sleep Survey 2023, 58% of Indians consider snoring a sign of good sleep highlighting that they are unaware of the fact that snoring is a potential trigger of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and other sleep-related issues.

Symptom of sleep apnea

OSA is typically distinguishable from other sleep disorders by loud snoring which is followed by silence. The disorder is brought on by the upper airway becoming blocked repeatedly while a person is asleep, disrupting their sleep. This condition is linked to various cardio-metabolic disorders and has the potential to be damaging in the long run.

Health risks of sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is linked to several health problems, including heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, strokes, and even a shorter life span. People who have obstructive sleep apnea generally experience excessive daytime fatigue and irritability because they do not obtain enough restorative sleep at night. They may have difficulties keeping awake and find themselves constantly drifting off when working, watching television, or even while driving leading to a higher susceptibility to accidents.

How does a CPAP machine work?

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy stands out as one of the most successful approaches among the several non-invasive therapies available for obstructive sleep apnea. It is a device that employs light air pressure to maintain the airways open while people sleep. The use of positive pressure may be employed to ease breathing difficulties or prevent upper airway collapse, which occurs in obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP machines offer comfort to ensure that people have a restful night's sleep to improve the management of sleep apnea.
