White Christmas now more likely, experts say, for first time in 12 years

With Christmas only a matter of months away and temperatures across the country starting to drop, many Brits will be hoping that we experience a white Christmas, but what are the chances of this actually happening?

Experts at OLBG have slashed their odds to reveal that there’s a 55% chance of snow falling on Christmas day. Christmas Day back in 2010 was the last time widespread snowfall was reported across the UK, meaning we haven’t witnessed a White Christmas for 12 years.

The Met Office defines a White Christmas by one snowflake falling in the 24 hours of December 25. The lowest daily temperature recorded in October was back in 1948 in the Scottish village of Dalwhinnie, where the Met Office reports temperatures dropped to -11.7°C.

The odds of a White Christmas in 2022 have been slashed from 2/1 to 4/5. Coral have slashed the odds that we see snow on Christmas Day this year.

The last widespread White Christmas we had in the UK was back in 2010 with snow or sleet at 83% of the recording stations. And bookmakers make it 2/1 that this October is the coldest that we see on record with a 33% chance of it happening according to the odds.

A chilly wave seems to be hitting the UK this week and the chances of snow falling seem to be getting more and more likely.

The coldest October recorded in the UK was back in 1948 with -11.7°c in Dalwhinnie (Highland) the current coldest October day.
